Law Clerks for the Idaho Appellate Courts

The five justices of the Idaho Supreme Court and the four judges of the Idaho Court of Appeals each employ two law clerks, typically for a one- or two-year term. The appellate judges hire their own clerks. Please see the information provided below for details on applying for a clerkship in each chamber. The salary structure for law clerks is:

Chief Justice Roger Burdick

Next available clerkship would begin in August 2017.  Two-year commitment required.   

Application requirements:  cover letter, résumé, law school transcript, writing sample, letters of recommendation.  Recommendation letters may be sent separately. Apply before June 15, 2016.

 

Justice Daniel T. Eismann

Next available clerkship would begin July 31, 2017.  One-year commitment required. Applications are accepted for the next law clerk term until June 15, 2016.

Application requirements:  Cover letter, résumé (including class rank and G.P.A.), transcript, writing sample (preferably 10-20 pages), and any letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation may be sent separately.  

 

Justice Jim Jones

Next available clerkship would begin in August 2017. One or two year commitment required. Apply before June 15, 2016.

Application requirements: cover letter, resume, law school transcript, writing sample, two or three letters of recommendation. Recommendation letters may be sent separately. 

 

Justice Warren E. Jones

Next available clerkship would begin August 2016.  One-year commitment required.

Application packet accepted June 1, 2015 through July 31, 2015.

Application requirements:  cover letter, résumé, law school transcript (does not need to be “certified” transcript), writing sample (10-15 pages) which must reflect Bluebook usage, and letters of recommendation which may be sent separately.

 

Justice Joel Horton

Next available clerkship would begin in August 2017.  One clerkship available in August each year.  Clerkships are for a period of two-years.  

Application requirements:  cover letter, résumé, law school transcript, writing sample not edited by another, two or three letters of recommendation. Recommendation letters may be sent separately. Applications from third-year students are accepted between June 1 and June 30 for the position to be filled following their graduation. Law school graduates may apply on the same schedule.

Chief Judge John M. Melanson

Next available clerkship would begin in August 2017.  Applications are accepted each year between January and May for positions which begin in August for the following calendar year.  Interviews are conducted primarily during the summer. Hiring of law clerks is normally for a two-year commitment, with one position available each year.

Application requirements:  cover letter, résumé, law school transcript, writing sample, two or three letters of recommendation.  Recommendation letters may be sent separately.

 

Judge Sergio A. Gutierrez

Next available clerkship would begin in August 2017. Application requirements: cover letter, résumé, law school transcript, unedited writing sample, and letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation may be sent separately.

 

Judge David W. Gratton

Next available clerkship would begin in August 2017. Application packets accepted April 1, 2016, through July 31, 2016.

Application requirements: cover letter, résumé, unofficial transcript, writing sample (with explanation of extent of editing by others, if applicable), and two letters of recommendation. Judge Gratton seeks applicants in the top 20% of class.  Applicants are required to submit a record of grades for first two years as soon as grades are released.

 

Judge Molly Huskey

The Idaho Courts have an opening for a Law Clerk for Court of Appeals Judge Molly Huskey, who will take office on September 8, 2015.  The clerkship is for a period of one year.
